[Announcement] New Writer: Lizzie

2009 December 16

She’s usually letting the us into her world on her personal blog What’s With The A, but starting today you can also catch Lizzie here on CrayonBeats! Lizzie is a poet, writer, an avid reader of period pieces and manga, and she’s here to share some of her interests with you all out there in CB Land. Say hello and play nice, and maybe she’ll let us know exactly what’s with the A.

Hi Hi, my name is Elizabeth but (I will respectfully ignore you if you call me that) you can call me Lizzie. I am a full-time student at QC-CUNY majoring in English with a minor in Japanese. I read a few Shonen mangas and a few Shoujo in my spare time. I enjoy Period Romance novels (set in seventeenth or eighteenth centuries). I listen to all types of music (rap does not count in my book) when I have the chance and go to the movies when I should be studying. I cook, clean and counsel friends but procrastination is a must. Hope you enjoy my writing.

Late Night Special with Richie Cunning

2009 December 15

Who is Richie Cunning? Let’s learn together. Richie is an emerging hip hop artist from San Francisco, California. He’s made appearances on Zion I’s “The Search & The Seizure” mixtape, Grip Grand’s “Brokelore” album (“A Penny”), Cumulus & Rob Rush’s “Texas EP” (“This N That Remix”), and more. Richie was also on URB’s Next 1000 last year.

I received a couple of emails about Richie’s new project from the people over at Routine Fly, so here I am pushing it your way.

In anticipation of his upcoming debut release (set for January 15th, 2010), “Night Train“, Richie has put together a mixtape of rare songs and new material to get people excited for the album. For you, the reader, is that mixtape… “Late Night Special“.

Swet Goes Red

2009 December 14

by Tiffology

Fourteen days into the project, Danish graffiti writer Swet will be doing 100 red pieces in 100 days. Every day, he’ll upload each piece at Molotow. The color he’s using is the Molotow Premium 400ml Swet100 Traffic Red.

The project began on December 1st, 2009 and will go on until March 10th, 2010 (my birthday, btw).

Swet about the project: “for me it’s a challenge to see if I can find the time to paint even more without neglecting work or my family. And of course see what I can do with my style when all the pieces have to be different and with only one fill in colour to work with…”

SoundCheck: Siren’s Eye

2009 December 12

I know this may seem as if I’m on a Scott Michael Foster bender, but I’ve been meaning to post about him for a while now. Like I mentioned before in my review of Teenage Dirtbag, I’ve been a fan of SMF for a while now, mainly due to ABC Family’s GREEK…something I also highly recommend anyone between the ages of 17-29 watch, it’s super funny. But more on that later. Right now I want to talk about Scott’s band Siren’s Eye. I usually don’t like bands from actors I enjoy watching and visa versa. There’s just something off-putting when singers try to act and actors try to sing (I’m looking at you, Hillary Duff), usually because one of the two don’t pan out as well as you hoped, and it’s really impressive when an actor/singer masters both…at least to me it is. Ok, enough of my haterade sprinkled rambling and onto the SoundCheck.

Movie Review: Teenage Dirtbag

2009 December 11

After months of putting it off, I finally got around to watching Teenage Dirtbag, which was actually released earlier this year on DVD and in select theaters. I’m so glad I did watch it, but I’m also a little miffed at myself that it took me so long to see it. Why? Well as a movie based on true events, it’s probably one of the better movies I’ve seen in a long, long time. I think I may go so far as to put it right up there with Manic, Mysterious Skin and Brick on my Top Movies To Force My Friends To See list.

Shafiq Husayn’s “Lil Girl”

2009 December 6
by Tiffology

Shafiq Husayn, part of the Sa-Ra group, released his first solo album “Shafiq En’ A-Free-Ka” on October 6th with Plug Research. In the last few months, I’ve been keeping up with all of his EPK series, and each one made me want to cop the album when it was finished. I haven’t listened to/purchased it yet, but I need to. It’s on my list of things-to-get.

The single track “Lil girl”, featuring Fatima, has been out for awhile. Now it finally has a video to it! Go watch it here, since I can’t embed vimeo videos here. Great sounds.

MPHO

2009 December 5
by tiffny

I think I need to make space on my ipod. Yesterday, I accidentally became an insta-fan of MPHO ( pronounced mmm-po) while doing some online window shopping. Via Asos’s digital fashion magazine I read up on MPHO who was featured as their ‘One To Watch’ in 2010, and after youtubing her single ‘Box n Locks’ I gotta say, I agree. The song is fun and danceable with lyrics defying stereotypes that I can relate to, and even more so, her voice is odd. The good kind of odd. Think Santogold or MIA. When I first checked out her video, it kinda didn’t like the look and almost closed the window (I was getting a lot of Brihannce, which isn’t her fault..more like the director’s fault). But I kinda stopped watching and started listening more and I actually really like the song. Clicking along I came across another video that does a good job of “getting to know Mpho” and after watching that, I think was when I officially said, ok, I’ll be your fan. haha Yeah, anywho, check out both the ‘getting to know you’ and her official  video for Box n Locks, and a cover of Heavyweight Champion of the World by Reverend and the Makers after the break and let me know what you think.

Artist Interview: Elaquent

2009 December 1

Starting December off with another interview. Meet Elaquent, or eQ for short. He’s a beat maker from Ontario, Canada. In the city of Guelph, to be exact. He’s teamed up with ThinkLoud Records and Digi Crates Records, so be on the lookout for the LP he’ll be releasing on ThinkLoud next year.

Lingering between hip hop, neo-soul, and downtempo, the man eQ shouldn’t be slept on. He dropped a series of beat tapes (3 volumes so far), titled “In Colour” dirty/dirtier/dirtiest loops. Sometime earlier this year, he dropped “After Midnight“, which is more like a real album compared to the 3 beat tapes before. The album is probably best enjoyed “After Midnight”… when you’re ready to kick back and relax your feet. It has that laidback, jazzy-soul vibe that your mind can and will sink into. Guest spots include his brother Es, Moka Only, Mishoo The Drumkit, Solar C, O-Phrap, and a couple others. This, along with the “In Colour” volumes, can be downloaded at the end of the interview. He’s a cool guy, so don’t hesitate to read the interview, listen to his music, and connect with him.

Grizzly Bear’s “Ready, Able”

2009 November 30

Grizzly Bear is an indie rock/experimental band from Brooklyn. They are signed with Warp Records, which makes them one of the few non-electronic bands signed with Warp.

The band is formed by Daniel Rossen, Ed Droste, Chris Taylor, and Christopher Bear. In May of this year, they released their third full-length album, “Veckatimest“. From that album, they now have a video for their song, “Ready, Able”.

I saw the video for it and was stunned. It was brilliantly done in claymation. Check it out…
